WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitman College senior Adriel Borshansky, after running his winning streak in singles to 19 matches last Saturday, has been named Northwest Conference Student Athlete of the Week for men's tennis.
Borshansky, who has a 51-9 career record in singles, got his day started last Saturday with a 6-0, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles, which helped Whitman roll to an 8-1 win over Lewis & Clark.
That team triumph gave Whitman its sixth consecutive undefeated NWC season.
After downing Lewis & Clark, Borshansky and his teammates drove two hours to Lewiston, Idaho, for a match against NAIA powerhouse Lewis-Clark State. Whitman came up short, losing 7-2 to the Warriors, but Borshansky stretched his senior season winning streak to 19 with a 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 victory at No. 5 singles.
Whitman, which cruised to its fifth straight NWC title this spring, ended the regular season with records of 19-4 overall and 12-0 in conference.
Borshansky and Conor Holton-Burke, the only other senior on the men's team, have helped Whitman stay undefeated against NWC teams over the course of their four seasons.
While deep Whitman rosters have given Borshansky relatively few opportunities to play doubles, his career record in doubles is 17-4. He has played doubles twice this season, teaming with sophomore Andrew La Cava for a victory in the No. 1 spot but losing at No. 3 last Saturday with junior Sam Sadeghi against Lewis-Clark State.
Ranked No. 1 in the West Region and No. 8 nationally, Whitman gets a final test this weekend when it hosts the four-team NWC post-season tournament. Two more victories would give Whitman the NWC's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III national championship tournament.
