WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Despite playing a number of competitive matches, the Willamette University men's tennis team came up empty in dropping a 9-0 Northwest Conference decision to Whitman College Saturday afternoon in the Bratton Tennis Center.
Whitman, now 9-2 on the season, stayed perfect in NWC play, improving to 8-0 in the conference standings. Willamette saw its NWC record slip to 5-4.
Whitman swept three decisions in doubles, although two of the matches were close.
Christoph Fuchs and Quin Miller got past Willamette's Matthew Houser and Andrew Murakami by an 8-5 count at No. 1 doubles, and Justin Hayashi and Dan Wilson clipped Cody Ferguson and Micah Mack 8-6 at No. 2.
Nadeem Kassam and Chris Bailey ran the table at No. 3 doubles, winning 8-0.
Whitman's toughest match in singles came at No. 3, where Jake Cappel rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Houser. Adriel Borshansky, a freshman, posted the quickest decision, a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at No. 4.
Wilson at No. 2 singles and Jasper Follows at No. 5 won 7-5 first-set tie-breakers en route to straight-set victories over Murakami and Mack, respectively.
At No. 1 singles, Whitman's Chris Bailey cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Cody Ferguson. Fuchs downed Michael Moore 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 to complete the Whitman sweep.
With the start of its Spring Break, Whitman hits the road next week to play six conference matches in four days, starting with Pacific Lutheran on Monday afternoon.
Willamette's next match is Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Whitman.
