WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- With short-handed Lewis & Clark having to forfeit two matches, the Whitman College men's tennis team made quick work of the Pioneers in a 9-0 Northwest Conference victory Friday afternoon.

Nadeem Kassam

Whitman, playing on its outdoor courts for the first time this season, improved to 7-0 in the NWC and 8-2 on the season. The loss dropped Lewis & Clark to 2-7 in conference and 2-10 overall.

Nadeem Kassam and Justin Hayashi did most of the damage at the top for Whitman.

Kassam, who had not played in a month due to a sore shoulder, outscored Vincent Groot 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Chris Bailey for an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Justin Hayashi

Hayashi, in addition to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 2 singles, joined forces with Dan Wilson for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.

Thomas Roston, David Deming and freshman Conor Holton-Burke also racked up straight-set victories in singles for Whitman.

Because Lewis & Clark had just five players available, it forfeited at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

Whitman stays at home Saturday to host Willamette at 11 a.m. In the event of rain showers, the match will be played in the Bratton Tennis Center.

Lewis & Clark heads to Spokane, Wash., Saturday to play a 10 a.m. match at Whitworth.
