WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitman College didn't lose a set while opening defense of its 2008 Northwest Conference men's tennis title with a 9-0 victory over Puget Sound Friday afternoon in the Bratton Tennis Center.
Whitman, which kicked off its season in late January with a pair of non-conference matches, upped its early record to 2-1. Puget Sound was playing its first match of the season.
After sweeping the doubles matches for a 3-0 lead, Whitman ran the table in singles to complete the shutout. Chris Bailey at No. 1 and Dan Wilson at No. 3 blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0. Quin Miller was a 6-0, 6-4 winner at No. 4 singles, and Christoph Fuchs cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6.
Jake Cappel got past Puget Sound's George Murphy 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and Nadeem Kassam held off Alex Harrison 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5.
Wilson teamed with Justin Hayashi for an 8-0 Whitman triumph at No. 2 doubles, but the other two matches in doubles were more competitive. Kassam and Etienne Moshevich slipped past Murphy and Jamie Hosmer by an 8-5 count at No. 1, and Cappel and Bailey posted an 8-4 win over Ollie Napier and Scooter Sabel at No. 3.
Whitman returns to NWC action at 9 a.m. Saturday when Pacific Lutheran comes to Walla Walla. Puget Sound plays at 1 p.m. Saturday at Whitworth.
