WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Courtney Lawless, a first-year player on the Whitman College tennis team, won five of her six matches last weekend and earned this spring's first Northwest Conference Student Athlete of the Week award for women's tennis.
Lawless, who won three times at No. 1 singles, helped the Missionaries win two of three matches in western Oregon.
After dropping a 6-3 decision at Linfield on Saturday, Whitman rebounded for a 9-0 neutral-court victory over California's University of La Verne on Sunday and then slipped past Willamette 5-4 on Monday. The latter two matches were played in Salem, Ore.
Lawless, who began the season with a No. 19 West Region ranking in singles, started her weekend in impressive fashion, posting a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Abby Olbrich, a Linfield senior who has a No. 4 ranking in the west
Against La Verne, Lawless went toe-to-toe against No. 18 Laina Matsuda in the first set before finishing off a 7-5, 6-2 victory.
Willamette senior Shannon Palmer, ranked No. 21 in the region, was no match for Lawless on Monday. Lawless cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
"Courtney played really well this weekend," Whitman coach John Hein said. "All three of her wins in singles are big."
Lawless also contributed to two victories at No. 1 doubles. After teaming with junior Alyssa Roberg for an 8-4 win against La Verne, Lawless joined Maddy Webster, another of Whitman's first-year players, for an 8-3 win against Willamette.
Lawless and Roberg, who won the doubles title at last fall's ITA regional tournament, are ranked No. 2 in doubles in the West Region.
In the No. 1 doubles match against Linfield, Roberg and Lawless had a 5-2 lead before Olbrich and Caroline Brigham got hot, reeling off six straight games to take the match.
Lawless and her teammates are back on the road this weekend, playing matches at Pacific Lutheran at 3:30 p.m. Friday and at Puget Sound at 11 a.m. Saturday.
