Both the men's and women's teams have received NCAA Division III Scholar All-America awards for the fall semester, as given by the College Swim Coaches Association.
With a combined grade point average (gpa) of 3.52, the Whitman men's team ranks second on the national list, trailing only Oberlin College and its 3.60 team gpa.
To earn Scholar All-America honors, a team must post a minimum gpa of 3.00. The Whitman women qualified with a 3.29 team gpa.
Whitman is the only NWC school to appear on either the men's or women's list for the fall semester. A total of 90 schools from around the country made the women's list. The men's list numbers 56.
"Congratulations on this very significant honor," Whitman athletics director Dean Snider wrote in an email last Friday to members of the Missionary swim teams.
"What a wonderful year you are having. You continue to excel both in the pool and in the classroom. Your support and enthusiasm for each other is a beautiful example of collegiate sport at its best.
"You are excellent ambassadors for your school, our athletics department, your team, your families and yourselves. We could not be more proud of you."
The Whitman swim teams are coached by Jenn Blomme, now in her tenth season.
