Whitman women suffer 1-0 defeat at Lewis & Clark

PORTLAND — Lewis & Clark College eked out a 1-0 women’s Northwest Conference soccer victory over Whitman College here Saturday at Griswold Stadium.

“We played very well again and had several opportunties early in the game,” Whitman coach Heather Cato said. “Unfortunately, it has been the story of our season.

“We control the majority of the game yet the result doesn’t show it,” she said.

Emily Thompson scored the Pioneers’ game-winning goal at 62:25 of the second half, with Natalie Levy and Kylie Carera each being credited with an assist.

L&C outshot Whitman 11-9 and held an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. Whitman goalkeeper Emily Davis was credited with seven stops while The Pioneers’ Geena Fong thwarted four Missionary direct aims.

Whitman fell to 3-7-3 in the conference and 4-10-3 overall going into today’s game at Willamette University in Salem, Ore. Whitman concludes its season Friday  vs. Linfield on its home pitch.

The Pioneers, who entertain Whitworth today, improved to 5-4-3 and 5-7-3 with Saturday’s win.
