Barton Ties for 2nd at Golf Championships

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- With sophomore Brian Barton finishing in a three-way tie for second place, the Whitman College men's golf team placed fifth among eight schools as the Northwest Conference Championships concluded Sunday at the Tokatee Golf Club near Blue River, Ore.
Barton shot 78 today to finish with a 36-hole score of 150, five shots behind the winner, Pacific's Max Bonk.
Whitman's team score in the final round was 322, which gave the Missionaries a 637 total for the tournament. That was seven strokes better than sixth-place Whitworth. Willamette was seventh at 650 and George Fox eighth at 670.
Linfield was first in the team scoring with a 604 total. Pacific Lutheran was second at 613, two strokes better than Puget Sound and five shots in front of Pacific.
Steve Campbell, a Whitman junior, shot 77 in the final round to finish at 156, tied for 12th in the individual scoring. Freshman John Abercrombie carded his second straight 80 for a 160 total. Junior Grant Brandal rounded out Whitman's Sunday team score with an 87, which left him with a 177 total for the tournament.
Junior Paul De Barros and sophomore Noah Jolley shot Sunday scores of 89 and 92, respectively, to finish with tourney totals of 173 and 174.
In the season-long final standings, including scoring from the Fall Classic and Spring Classic, Whitman and Willamette tied for sixth place with 13 points, two points behind Whitworth and six points back of Pacific Lutheran. Linfield won the men's golf title with a total of 30 points while Pacific and Puget Sound tied for second with 25 points.
George Fox was eighth with four points. Lewis & Clark was last.
