WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitman College goalkeeper Lauren Brougham, after posting her first shutout of the season last Sunday, has been named Northwest Conference Student Athlete of the Week for women's soccer (defense).
Brougham, a junior, made six saves against a dozen shots in a 2-0 victory over Lewis & Clark at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Hallie Swan, a first-year midfielder who booted her first collegiate goal in the same game and assisted on Whitman's second goal, was the runner-up in voting for the award for players on offense.
Brougham, who has shared time between the pipes this season with two other Whitman keepers, was making only her second NWC start in Sunday's game.
After Whitman took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute, Brougham made four saves over the final 13 minutes of the first half to keep Whitman in front. She made two more saves in the second half before Whitman added its insurance goal with 12 minutes left to play.
Brougham has played in four NWC games this fall, surrendering just three goals. Her 0.88 goals against average in conference games ranks her third in the NWC.
Whitman, now 5-6 on the season and 3-5 in the NWC, hosts Whitworth at noon Wednesday at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
The Missionaries return to the road this weekend, playing two games in Tacoma, Wash., but then finish the regular season with four of their last five games at home.
