Whitman Pioneer Business Manager
The Business Manager oversees the daily business operation of The Pioneer. As one of the most senior-level positions on the paper, he/she must be capable of working independently, with little supervision.
The Pioneer generates a large amount of its revenue through advertisements. The Business Manager is tasked with hiring an Advertising Manager and a team of Advertising Associates. The Business Manager will work closely with the Advertising Manager to develop an advertising strategy for the spring semester and to ensure that ads are placed and correctly billed each week.
The Business Manager also oversees the weekly distribution of the paper, including managing current subscriptions as well as seeking out new subscribers. Monthly payroll and billing, in addition to all standard expense tracking, are the responsibility of the Business Manager. He/she works closely with the Editor-in-Chief on longer-term projects to increase the efficiency and the revenue of The Pioneer as well as to create the budget at the end of the spring semester. He/she is also tasked with ensuring that all spring semester expenditures stay on track with the current fiscal year budget.
The Business Manager is expected to attend the weekly editor’s meeting, to stop by Wednesday production nights to ensure that all advertising content is placed, and to meet regularly with the Editor-in-Chief to report on all matters of business. This position requires an average commitment of 20 hours per week.
