Women Edge UBC for G-Slalom Victory

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The margin was razor thin, but the Whitman College women’s alpine ski team picked up its second victory of the NW Collegiate Ski Conference season on Sunday in giant slalom races at Silver Mountain near Kellogg, Idaho.

The Missionary women took first in the team scoring with a combined time of 347.21 for its top three finishers. The University of British Columbia (UBC) was the runner-up in 347.33.

Meanwhile, in the men’s giant slalom on Sunday, Whitman finished second to their UBC counterparts for a second straight day.

Lexie Drechsel led the Whitman women with a sixth-place time of 1:54.91 for her two runs. Teammate Polly Evans was right on her heels, placing seventh in 1:55.54.

Torey Anderson completed the Missionary team score, placing 10th in 1:56.76.

UBC’s Emma Beattie won the women’s event for a second straight day with a time of 1:49.41. The next two UBC finishers were eighth and 11th.

In the men’s event Sunday, Tim Bak was fourth (1:49.71) and Nathan Ord fifth (1:49.81) to pace the Whitman men, who were second in the team scoring with a collective time of 331.13.

Brad West rounded out the Missionary team score with an 11th-place time of 1:51.61. Also racing for Whitman were Richard O’Brien (17th, 1:54.27), Charlie Procknow (33rd, 2:05.51) and Chris Machesney (DNF, 2nd run).

For a second straight day, UBC’s Matt Bunston and Ben Middleton finished first and second.

With six NWCSC races now in the books, Whitman has four men in the top eight of the

season-long individual point standings, and three Missionary women are in their top 10.

Machesney sits in second place in the men’s standings, thanks in part to his two giant slalom victories earlier in the season at Brundage Mountain. Bak is in fourth, Ord in fifth and West in eighth.

In the women’s point standings, Drechsel is third, Evans sixth and Anderson 10th.

The Whitman alpine teams are back on the road this weekend with a pair of slalom events set for Saturday and Sunday at Mission Ridge near Wenatchee, Wash.
