Men Second, Women Third in G-Slalom

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The men were second and the women third as the Whitman alpine ski teams hit the slopes for a pair of NW Collegiate Ski Conference giant slalom races Saturday at Silver Mountain near Kellogg, Idaho.
Sophomore Nathan Ord paced the men’s team, which was second in a nine-school field with a combined time of 344.78 seconds for its top three.
Ord finished sixth, completing his two runs down the hill in 1:54.52. Sophomore Chris Machesney was eighth overall, just one-tenth of a second behind Ord.
Junior Tim Bak rounded out the men’s team score, placing 11th in 1:55.64. Sophomore Brad West also skied for Whitman, finishing 15th in 1:56.62.
The University of British Columbia (UBC) was first in the team scoring with Matt Bunston and Ben Middleton finishing first and second, respectively, among the 48 skiers who finished both runs.
On the women’s side, Whitman was third with a total time of 362.27 seconds. First place went to the College of Idaho (359.42) with UBC (360.27) taking second.
Sophomores Polly Evans and Lexie Drechsel finished eighth and ninth, respectively, for the Missionaries. Evans clocked a 1:59.96 for her two runs, nipping Drechsel by less than three-tenths of a second.
Torey Anderson, also a sophomore, was 12th in 2:02.11. A total of 39 women completed both runs.
UBC’s Emma Beattie won the women’s event with a time of 1:55.94.
