WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Sophomore striker Chris Perkins, who booted two goals and assisted on a third as Whitman College collected two Northwest Conference road victories last weekend, has been named an NWC Student Athlete of the Week for men's soccer.

Perkins, who netted the weekly award for offensive players, made a huge contribution in Sunday's 2-1 triumph at Pacific, heading home a game-tying goal late in regulation before his volley late in overtime made Whitman a winner.

The 6-foot-4 forward also a hand in Saturday's 2-1 victory at George Fox, assisting on a goal that tied the game with little more than six minutes left in regulation. Whitman tacked on a second goal a few minutes later to pocket that win.

With Whitman using a one-forward formation much of the time in its first five games, Perkins has come off the bench in a reserve role in all but one of those games.

"Chris is a great weapon to bring off the bench," Whitman coach Mike Washington says. "He's tall and strong, and he gives his teammates a great target.

"He also has great technical abilities for a player his size. He's still working on becoming a more physical presence in the air, but he hits the ball really well with his feet."

Two goals and one assist in two games is "exactly the kind of production we'd like to see from Chris on a regular basis," Washington adds. "He has that potential.

"Once Chris learns to put his size and strength to better use, he's going to be a much bigger headache for opposing defenders. He's going to make himself much harder to handle on the field."

With Whitman having played just five games thus far this season, Perkins now leads the team in scoring with five points, based on his two goals and one assist last weekend. He played in 15 games a year ago as a freshman, contributing one goal and one assist.

Whitman, off to a 2-0 start in the NWC (2-1-2 overall), stays at home to continue NWC play this weekend. The Missionary men host Pacific Lutheran on Saturday and Puget Sound on Sunday. Both games start at 2:30 p.m.
