WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The Whitman College tennis teams were well represented last week when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its annual NCAA Division III fall rankings.
As a team, the Whitman men's squad is No. 29 at the national level and No. 7 in the West Region.
A women's team ranking wasn't done for the West Region, and Whitman didn't crack the national top 30, but three Missionary women are listed high in the regional rankings in both singles and doubles.
Whitman junior Alyssa Roberg, No. 3 in the regional singles rankings, joins first-year teammate Courtney Lawless for a No. 2 regional ranking in doubles. Those are the highest rankings of any players in the Northwest Conference.
Lawless also ranks No. 19 on the regional singles ladder while her twin sister, Morgan Lawless, is No. 12.
While the ITA ranked the nation's top 30 women's teams this fall, it did not compile national singles or doubles rankings.
Whitman's highest ranked player this fall is on the men's side, where sophomore Andrew La Cava is No. 7 in singles at the national level and No. 2 in the West Region.
Also in singles, senior Conor Holton-Burke is No. 32 nationally and No. 8 regionally. He and junior Matt Tesmond are No. 20 nationally in doubles and No. 5 regionally.
Juniors Jeff Tolman (No. 19) and Sam Sadeghi (No. 26) are hold regional rankings in singles.
Tolman and La Cava are No. 7 in the regional doubles rankings while Sadeghi teams with freshman James Rivers for a No. 15 doubles ranking.
Whitman is the only men's team in the Northwest Conference with players who are ranked this fall at either the regional or national level.
The fall rankings are based in part on last spring's NCAA season as well as the regional and national tournaments sponsored by the ITA and U.S. Tennis Association in September and October.
Roberg won the Pacific Northwest singles title and teamed with Courtney Lawless to win the doubles crown. Morgan Lawless advanced to the singles semifinals before losing to Roberg.
Roberg and Courtney Lawless advanced to the national tournament where they won two matches and lost two in doubles. Roberg lost her first match in singles to drop from that competition.
La Cava won the men's regional singles title for a second straight year, edging Holton-Burke in the finals. Holton-Burke and Tesmond captured the doubles title, beating La Cava and Tolman in that regional championship match.
La Cava won two of his four matches in singles at the national tournament. Holton-Burke and Tesmond lost their first match in doubles to drop from the national bracket.
