Whitworth Women Rally Past Macalester

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitworth University rallied past Macalester College 67-61 Saturday afternoon in the third annual Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic in Sherwood Center on the Whitman College campus.

Macalester, an NCAA Division III school from St. Paul, Minn., jumped in front 9-1 in the first three minutes of the game and held a slim 32-30 lead at halftime. The Scots were up 45-37 with 13 minutes left in the second half before Whitworth began whittling away at its deficit.

The Pirates took the lead for good at 60-59 with just under two minutes remaining and pulled away in the closing seconds.

Whitworth, also an NCAA DIII school, evened its early season record at 1-1. Macalester slipped to 0-2.

Cassie Pilkinton, who led the Pirates with 15 points, three assists, three rebounds and two steals, was named to the all-tournament team.

Heather Burke drilled three of Whitworth's seven 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. Kim Bluff made both of her 3-point attempts and was good for 10 points. Katie Delaney and Liz Horiatis mirrored one another with six rebounds and five assists.

Majra Mucic paced Macalester with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Scots, who outrebounded Whitworth 52-31, also got 10 points and 10 boards from Ann Baltzer.

Trina PaStarr added to the Macalester cause with 10 points and six rebounds. PaStarr, who had 22 points and 10 rebounds in Friday's game against Whitman, was also named to the all-tournament team.

Maggie Wood with 10 points gave Macalester a fourth player scoring in double digits.

The four-team, two-day tournament concludes today at 6 p.m. when host Whitman plays Lewis-Clark State.

Whitman's tournament honors the memory of Kim Evanger Raney, a graduate of Issaquah (Wash.) High School who played basketball at Whitman, graduating in 2002 with a degree in psychology. She died in March of 2007 in cycling accident.
