WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Alex Fitch, the only player to break par, shot a 2-under 70 to pace Linfield College to a slim lead in the team scoring in Friday's opening round of the Northwest Conference Men's Golf Championship Tournament at Canyon Lakes in Kennewick, Wash.
Linfield, which carded a 301 team score for its top four golfers, finished the day six strokes in front of Whitworth University and 10 shots ahead of third-place University of Puget Sound.
The rest of the field, with the exception of one team, also remained in contention, trailing the leader by no more than 19 strokes.
Whitman College, which is hosting the two-day, 36-hole tournament, is in fourth place with a 316 total.
Pacific Lutheran University is fifth at 319, just a single stroke ahead of both George Fox University and Pacific University.
Willamette University is in eighth with a 355 total. Lewis & Clark College did not field a complete team.
The tournament, which concludes with a second round on Saturday, counts for 50 percent of the point totals that determine the final conference standings and NWC champion.
Based on scoring at the Fall and Spring Classic tournaments, Puget Sound entered the championship tournament with 15 points. Linfield has 14 points, Pacific 13 points, Whitworth 10, and Whitman eight.
The rest of the standings show Pacific Lutheran with six points, George Fox with four, and Willamette with two.
Saturday's round begins at 9:30 a.m.
Pacific's Max Bonk and Puget Sound's Greg Kirkpatrick both shot even-par 72 in Friday's round and were tied for second place.
Whitworth's Jesse Salzwedel and Cameron Whittle were close behind at 73 and 75, respectively. Linfield's Yutaro Sakamoto was 2-over at 74.
Lewis & Clark's only two golfers, Mark Spathas (76) and Har Rai Khalsa (77), are also in the running. Others shooting 77 were Linfield's Josh Kay, Whitman's Andrew Welch, and Kyle Wilson of George Fox.
