Peterson Nets NWC Award for Women's BB

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Jenele Peterson, a guard on the Whitman College women's basketball team, has been named Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for her sport.
Peterson tallied a career-high 26 points against Puget Sound on Friday and added a game-high 23 points against Pacific Lutheran on Saturday.
The 5-foot-7 guard made 17 of 30 shots from the floor, including five of seven attempts from the 3-point line, in the two games.
She also averaged 4.5 assists (against just 1.5 turnovers) and 3.5 rebounds. She was on the floor for 37 of the 40 minutes in both games.
For the season, Peterson is averaging a team-high 14.9 points through 12 games. That ranks her sixth in the NWC in scoring.
She also ranks fifth in free throw accuracy (48-58, 82.8 percent), seventh in assists (2.83 apg) and 14th in field goal accuracy (59-131, 45.0 percent).
In her four NWC games to date, Peterson is averaging 19.8 points per game while shooting 50 percent (25-50) from the floor and 57.1 percent (8-14) from the 3-point line. In NWC-only statistics, she ranks second in scoring, third in 3-point shooting and seventh in field goal percentage.
Peterson is averaging 3.5 assists in conference games, which ranks her sixth. She also is No. 6 in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.5apg/3.0 tpg).
Peterson, a graduate of South High School in Redondo Beach, Calif., missed last season with a knee injury.
She earned All-NWC Honorable Mention in her first season at Whitman and made the All-NWC Second Team as a sophomore.
Whitman, 2-2 in the NWC and 7-5 overall, is in western Oregon this weekend, playing games at 6 p.m. Friday at Willamette (Salem) and at 4 p.m. Saturday at George Fox (Newberg).
