X-Country Runners Get Academic Honors

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The Whitman College cross country teams have received academic honors from a national coaches association.
Both the Missionary men's and women's teams have earned NCAA Division III All-Academic Team status as given by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

To be eligible for that honor, teams must have earned a team score at an NCAA regional meet and have a minimum 3.10 team cumulative grade point average.
The Whitman women's team exceled at its regional meet, placing second to qualify for the NCAA national championships for the first time since the school shifted its affiliation from the NAIA to NCAA in the late 1990s.
Meanwhile, a young Whitman men's team placed 10th at its regional meet.

Three members of the women's team -- seniors Yasmeen Colis, Michela Corcorran and Sara McCune -- also received individual All-America honors from the coaches association.
To be eligible for the academic award, runners must place in the top 35 at their regional meet and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.33 or higher.
Colis, a biology major, placed 12th at regionals while McCune, a geology-environmental studies major, was 16th. Corcorran, a religion major, was 34th.
Malcolm Dunn coaches the women's and men's cross country teams at Whitman.
