President's Scholarship in Art

If you have exceptional talent, experience, and demonstrated skill and idea in art and intend
to at least minor in Art with a departmental GPA of 3.0 or higher during your four years at
Whitman, the College invites you to apply for a President’s Scholarship in Art.

President’s Scholarships are awarded to entering students in recognition of exceptional talent.
The scholarship meets all of the student’s demonstrated financial need when combined with
scholarships or grants from any other sources and varies from $2,500 to $45,000 (according
to need). President’s Scholarships for students without demonstrated financial need will range
from $2,500 up to $6,000. Financial need is determined by the Office of Financial Aid Services
using data from both the FAFSA and CSS Profile.

President’s Scholarship in Art Application Process

1. Apply for Admission to Whitman: In order to be eligible for the President’s Scholarship you must apply for admission to the College by January 15, 2010.

2. Submit Financial Aid Forms: Both your FAFSA and CSS Profile must be submitted to the appropriate agencies by February 1, 2010.

3. Prepare Your Portfolio and Statement: Faculty in the Art Department select winners based upon their evaluation of the following material:

  1. A portfolio of your art work
    • A cover sheet that includes up to four images of your work.
    • Your portfolio should consist of 10 slides in a Microsoft PowerPoint format on CD. Submissions in other forms will not be considered. Do not submit original photographs or original artwork.
    • Each slide in your Microsoft PowerPoint presentation must be labeled with the size of the work, medium, date completed, and your name.
  2. A statement about your art background and future plans in studio art
    • This statement should 300 words or less in length and typewritten.

4. Send your portfolio to the Office of Admission, post-marked no later than February 15, 2010. Your submission will be cataloged and forwarded to the Art Department. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if youwould like your submissions returned to you.

5. Notification of Award Status: All applicants will be notified of their award status in writing by April 15, 2010.
