WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitman College junior Brandon Shaw was named to the First Team and freshman teammate Josh Duckworth netted Honorable Mention recognition when the All-Northwest Conference men's basketball team was announced Friday.

Shaw, a 6-foot-2 guard, led Whitman in scoring for a second straight season, averaging 14.4 points per game, and topped the NWC in steals for the second time in two seasons.

Duckworth, also a 6-foot-2 guard, was Whitman's second-leading scorer this season, averaging 12.6 points per game. He also averaged 3.4 rebounds and was second to Shaw in assists and steals.

Shaw, who earned Honorable Mention recognition a year ago, shot 49.8 percent from the floor this winter while canning 72.1 percent (124-172) of his free throws. Only two players in the conference made more free throws.

He led the NWC in steals, averaging 1.88 per game, and was fourth in assists at 3.54 per game. He also averaged four rebounds from his guard spot.

One of Shaw's best games of the season came in an overtime victory at George Fox. He scored 13 of Whitman's 17 overtime points, including the first nine Whitman put on the scoreboard in the extra session.

Shaw finished with 26 points in that game, matching his career high. He also added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Shaw combined 24 points and five steals in a game at Linfield and made 15 of 18 free throws in scoring 21 points to go with five rebounds and four assists against Eastern Oregon. He scored 18 points and dished three assists in Whitman's late season victory over top-ranked Whitworth.

With at least one more game left in his junior season, Shaw has run his career scoring total to 1,246 points, moving into the 15th spot on Whitman's all-time career scoring list.

Shaw is a graduate of Colleyville-Heritage High School in Dallas, Texas.

Duckworth shot 46.7 percent from the floor for the season, which included a 40.7 percentage (17-42) from the 3-point line. In 16 NWC games, he made 13 of 22 (59.1 percent) 3-point shots.

Duckworth was named NWC Player of the Week in mid-February after he averaged 19.5 points in two Whitman victories. He made 15 of 23 shots from the floor in those two games, including four of five tries from the 3-point line.

In a near perfect shooting night in one of those victories, Duckworth tallied 23 points while connecting on all eight of his field goal attempts and five of six free throws. He also handed out four assists and made four steals.

A few hours after Duckworth's award was announced, he played a pivotal role in an eighth-straight Whitman victory, an 82-79 come-from-behind triumph over previously undefeated Whitworth.

He contributed 24 points and eight rebounds, both of which were career-high numbers, to the big win. He was seven of 12 from the floor -- four of five from the 3-point stripe -- and six of eight from the free throw line.

Duckworth also had a big night in a non-conference overtime win against Simpson College. He scored 21 points, making seven of 10 shots from the floor, to go with six assists and six rebounds.

Duckworth is a graduate of Brentwood School in Los Angeles, Calif.
