IES: Berlin Language and Area Studies


The IES Berlin Language & Area Studies Program in Germany provides students with an opportunity to study the German language and about Germany in this thriving cultural and political center at the crossroads of East and West. Students can enroll either in courses with other US students at the IES Center or in courses with German students at Humboldt Universitat. All courses are taught by local faculty in German. To further facilitate cultural immersion, participants live in apartments with Germans, typically young professionals or families. A special feature of this program is the opportunity to enroll in an internship course. IES Berlin internships are available in places such as museums, government offices, theater, and publishing houses.

Fields of study:

Art history, German literature, film, theater, philosophy, economics, politics, sociology and women's studies as well as other fields

Eligibility:

Four semesters of college-level German or the equivalent (Language and Area Studies Program only); minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0

Semesters Offered:

Fall, Spring, Academic Year, Summer

Calendar:

August-December or August-February (for those taking University Courses)
March-June or March-Late July (for those taking University Courses)

Credits:

Minimum of 15 credits per semester - Required Courses:
German Language (4 credits)
Four Electives at IES Center and/or local University (3 credits each)

Credit Conversion:

1 IES credit = 1 Whitman credit

Housing:

In apartments with Germans

Internships:

Available in places such as museums, government offices, theaters and publishing houses. Internships occur at the end of each semester either in January-February or in July-August, except placements at schools and some social organizations.
