Whitman Women's Trio Advances in Tennis

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- After surviving play on Sunday, three Whitman College women's tennis players will do battle Monday in the singles and doubles championship matches of the USTA / ITA Pacific Northwest Fall Championships in Salem, Ore. 

 
Singles Bracket

Morgan Lawless

When the tournament resumes at 9 a.m., Whitman junior Alyssa Roberg will face first-year teammate Morgan Lawless in one of two semifinals matches in singles.

Roberg is the tournament's No. 2 seed in singles while Lawless is unseeded.

In the other semifinal, top-seeded Abby Olbrich, a Linfield senior, will match rackets with Whitworth senior Erica Bosman, the seventh seed.

Following the singles semifinals and finals, the doubles final will pit Roberg and Courtney Lawless (Morgan's twin sister) against Olbrich and her doubles partner, Caroline Brigham.

The Roberg-Lawless are the top seeds in the doubles bracket. Olbrich and Brigham are the No. 3 seeds.

 
Doubles Bracket

In singles action on Sunday, Roberg had little difficulty advancing to the semifinals. She beat Puget Sound's Kira Kearsley 6-0, 6-0 before downing Willamette's Shannon Palmer, the No. 6 seed, by a 6-2, 6-2 count.

Morgan Lawless advanced in singles with 6-2, 6-4 victories over both eighth-seeded Sabrian Gutierrez (Willamette) and Linfield's Brigham.

Courtney Lawless also was still alive in the singles bracket as play started Sunday. She breezed past Linfield's Kalia Nip but then dropped a tough 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 decision to Olbrich in the quarterfinals.

In doubles play Sunday, Roberg and Courtney Lawless advanced to the final with an 8-1 victory over Lewis & Clark's Olivia Sweetman and Lisa Osepyan followed by an 8-4 win over Willamette's Palmer and Gutierrez, the No. 4 seeds in doubles.

Morgan Lawless and her doubles partner, senior Emily Rolston, faced Olbrich and Brigham in the quarterfinals, falling 8-4.

In other action Sunday, Whitman senior Lizzy Schiller and sophomore teammate Hannah Palkowitz won the doubles consolation bracket with an 8-4 victory over a George Fox duo.
