WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- A pair of goals in the first 25 minutes of play propelled Whitman College to a 2-0 Northwest Conference women's soccer victory over Pacific Lutheran Saturday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Whitman, now 3-1 and all alone in first place in the early NWC standings, had the run of play in the opening half, outshooting the Lutes 8-2.
The loss dropped Pacific Lutheran to 1-2 in conference and 4-8 on the season.
Sophomore Pamela London gave Whitman an early 1-0 lead in the 17th minute, outracing the defense to a through ball from senior Amy Hasson.
London, in booting her first goal of the season, finished the quick-hitting strike with relative ease, flicking the ball to the back of the net as a the keeper came forward.
Eight minutes later, Hasson made it 2-0 with her seventh goal of the season. She collected a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box, whirling to drive a shot from the right side to the far post.
The two teams battled on more even terms in the second half, when Karli Hurbut put the first Lute shot on goal and later skipped a free-kick bullet off the crossbar.
Whitman finished the game with a 19-10 shot advantage, including a 10-1 surplus in shots on goal.
Senior keeper Lauren Brougham made one save to get the shutout for Whitman. Lauren Chambard had seven saves -- five in the second half -- to keep the Lutes close.
Hasson put three of her five shots on frame to spark Whitman's offense. The Missionaries also got three shots from sophomore Liz Clagett and two shots each from London, juniors Jaclyn Rudd and Erin Flannery, and sophomores Hallie Swan and MacKenzie Hughes.
Sarah Gamache led the Lutes with five shots. Hurlbut finished with three.
