CIEE: Dakar Language & Culture

 

Through CIEE, Whitman students may study a wide variety of subjects in the French-speaking West African nation of Senegal. Students on this program will take French language and Wolof language courses as well as three additional courses taught either in English or French. At the CIEE Center in Dakar, the coursework will focus on Africa in general, but specifically on Senegal. Students studying in Senegal will have the opportunity to supplement their studies with a for-credit internship.

Fields of Study:

French and Wolof languages, literature, economics, gender studies, anthropology, history, development studies, environmental studies, and education

Eligibility:

Minimum of 2 semesters of college-level French>

Semesters Offered:

Fall, Spring, Academic Year

Calendar:

Mid-August to mid-December; mid-January to mid-May

Credits:

15-17 credits per semester - Required Courses:
Contemporary Senegalese Society & Culture (3 credits)
French Language (3 credits)
Wolof Language (3 credits)
Two Electives Courses* (3 credits each)
*It is highly recommended that students on this program enroll in the Seminar on Living and Learning in Dakar (2 credits), in addition to the two electives, to help with processing the study abroad experience.

Credit Conversion:

1 CIEE credit = 1 Whitman credit

Housing:

Homestay with a Sengalese family;

Meals:

Meals are provided by the host family and students are given a weekly meal stipend to supplement and add variety to their diet.

Internships:

Internships and community service projects are available for credit in lieu of one course
