News Release Date:
Saturday, February 7
WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Whitman College kicked off its basesball season Saturday, one day late due to the weather, with an 11-6 loss to Occidental College in Los Angeles, Calif.
With Pete Stadmeyer shutting down the Tigers on four hits and three runs through six innings, Whitman took a 6-3 lead into the seventh frame. Occidental then pushed across eight runs in its final two at-bats to pull out the win, running its early season record to 4-0.
To make up for Friday's rain-out, the two teams played a second game Saturday. Whitman was ahead 13-11 with two runners aboard and one out in the bottom of the ninth when the game was suspended due to rain. The game will be resumed Sunday morning and then followed by third game of the weekend series.
In Saturday's first game, Whitman collected 10 hits and drew six walks but also left 10 runners stranded. Matt Morris-Rosenfeld had two hits on the day, including a two-run double in a four-run Missionary sixth inning. He also drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning to force home a run.
Michael Lazcano also had two hits for Whitman. Jason Sease singled home a run in the fifth inning, as did Sam Schonfeld in the sixth.
