WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- For the second time in three weeks, Whitman College senior Elise Otto has been named Northwest Conference Student Athlete of the Week for women's tennis.

Her latest NWC award, announced today, is the fifth time she has received the award in her four seasons at Whitman.

Elise Otto

Otto won twice at No. 1 singles and twice at No. 1 doubles last weekend as Whitman finished its regular season with victories at Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound, nailing down the third seed in this week's post-season playoffs.

In a 7-2 triumph at Pacific Lutheran, Otto posted a 6-3, 6-2 win in the top singles slot and teamed with a new doubles partner, junior Emily Rolston, for an 8-4 victory at the top of doubles ladder.

Otto was almost perfect in her No. 1 singles match at Puget Sound, winning 6-1, 6-0 to help short-handed Whitman squeak past the Loggers 5-4. She and Rolston won again at No. 1 doubles, cruising to an 8-2 victory.

Whitman played both weekend matches without Alyssa Roberg, one of its top players. Roberg sat out the matches to keep her allowable competition dates within NCAA limits.

Both Roberg and Otto won last October's ITA regional doubles title, advancing to the Small College National Championships. Those extra days of competition made it necessary for both players to miss a few spring dual matches.

Otto, who capped each of her first three seasons with All-NWC First-Team honors, has won a total of 111 matches (singles, doubles) in her four spring seasons at Whitman.

Otto and teammates battle second-seeded Linfield in one of this Saturday's playoff semifinals, which take place on the Whitworth campus in Spokane. That match is slated for a 2 p.m. start.

Whitworth faces No. 4 Willamette in Saturday's other semifinal, which gets underway at 10 a.m.

Winners of the two semifinals play at 10 a.m. Sunday in the finals. The winner of that match gets the NWC's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III national championship field.
