Welch in Third at NWC Men's Golf Classic

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Andrew Welch, a Whitman College freshman, shot a 5-over par 77 and sits in third place after Saturday's opening round of the Northwest Fall Classic at the Juniper Golf Club in Redmond, Ore.
With all nine NWC schools competing, Whitman is in fifth place in the team scoring after carding a 339 for its top four golfers.
Puget Sound tops the team scoring with a 320 total. Linfield, Pacific and Whitworth are all tied for second place, 10 strokes back of the Loggers.
George Fox and Pacific Lutheran are tied for sixth place, just one stroke behind Whitman.
Playing in cold and windy conditions, senior Brian Barton shot 82 for Whitman's second-best score. He was tied for 11th.
Freshman Jon Standen with an 89 and sophomore Eli Smith with a 91 filled out Whitman's team score.
Sophomore Geoff Burks and senior Max Rausch are also playing for Whitman. They shot 92 and 94, respectively.
Pacific's Max Bonk is the day-one leader with a 1-over par 73. Linfield's Alex Fitch is three strokes back in second place, one shot in front of Welch.
The men's Fall Classic concludes on Sunday with a second round of 18 holes.
