Winning its fifth straight match, Whitman ran its early season record to 5-2 and 4-1 in the NWC.

The Whitman duo recovered from an early 2-1 deficit to build a 7-4 cushion, but the Boxers bounced back to square the match at 7-7. That's when Lawless held serve before she and Roberg collected a service break to finish off their victory.

Morgan Lawless

Senior Emily Rolston and Morgan Lawless (Courtney's sister) pitched an 8-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles, downing Kelsey Trujillo and Lily Do.

Erin Minuth and Maddy Webster, two more first-year Whitman players, cruised at No. 3 doubles, notching an 8-1 victory over Rachel Mizuno and Amber Craviotto.

The Lawless sisters made quick work of their matches in singles. Courtney bypassed Yoshimoto 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Morgan shot past Mizuno by the same score at No. 3 for the clinching fifth team point.

Kate Kunkel-Patterson, a Whitman junior, overcame Trujillo 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

In the battle of big hitters at No. 1 singles, Roberg scrambled past Goya for a 6-4 win in the first set before pulling away 6-1 in the second.

In the last two matches to finish, Rolston was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Do at No. 5, and senior Lizzy Schiller got past Craviotto 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Schiller rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the second set to deny Craviotto a third set.

Whitman, already done for the weekend, stays at home next week for two more NWC matches. The Missionaries host Lewis & Clark at 4 p.m. next Friday and George Fox at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Meanwhile, Pacific plays again this weekend, traveling to Spokane to battle Whitworth at 10 a.m. Saturday.
