Whit Women's Tennis Team Banishes Loggers in Tacoma

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Sisters Courtney and Morgan Lawless had their hands in four victories as Whitman College won its fourth straight tennis match with a 6-3 Northwest Conference victory over Puget Sound on Saturday in Tacoma.

Whitman ran its season record to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the NWC. The Loggers skidded to 1-4 on the season and 1-3 in conference.

The Missionaries got the early jump in doubles, winning two of three matches.

Courtney Lawless teamed with junior Alyssa Roberg for an 8-1 decision over Josephine Dow and Allison Embernate at No. 1 doubles.

Morgan Lawless and senior Emily Rolston won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, beating Logan Thompson and Marissa Friedman.

Two first-year Missionaries, Erin Minuth and Maddy Webster, dropped a tight 9-7 decision to Ada Yu and Maddie Thiesse at No. 3 doubles.

After doubles, Whitman finished off its team triumph by winning four of six battles in singles.

Courtney Lawless powered past Thiesse 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles while Morgan Lawless was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Jenna Gerdsen at No. 2.

Rolston worked overtime at No. 4 singles, scrambling past Friedman 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. Sophomore Hannah Palkowitz pocketed the final singles win for Whitman at No. 6, where she downed Yu 7-6, 6-1.

Puget Sound scored singles points at No. 3, where Thompson knocked off junior Kate Kunkel-Patterson 6-1, 6-1, and at No. 5, where Dow bested senior Lizzy Schiller 7-6, 6-1.

After the match, Whitman returned to the courts in the Puget Sound Tennis Pavilion for a 7-2 exhibition victory over Bellevue Community College.

Whitman returns home for its next three NWC matches, starting with Pacific at 4 p.m. next Friday.

Lewis & Clark and George Fox then come to town on Friday and Saturday, March 9-10.
