Four First-Year Players Pace Whits to Women's Tennis Victory

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- With four first-year players making contributions, Whitman College blanked Pacific Lutheran 9-0 in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match Friday afternoon in Tacoma.
Whitman improved to 3-2 on the season and 2-1 in the NWC. The loss was the conference opener for the Lutes, who slipped to 0-3 overall.
The first-year duo of Courtney Lawless and Maddy Webster set the tone with a 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Morgan Lawless (Courtney's twin sister) and senior Emily Rolston were almost as dominant at No. 2, winning 8-1.
Senior Lizzy Schiller and sophomore Hannah Palkowitz completed the doubles sweep at No. 3, downing Allison McClure and Katherine Patton by an 8-4 count.
The most competitive match in singles came at No. 3, where junior Kate Kunkel-Patterson edged Tina Aarsvold 7-6 (7-1), 6-3
Courtney Lawless got the win at No. 1 singles, dispatching Leah Newell 6-1, 6-0 while sister Courtney posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Cora Wigen at No. 2.
Rolston and Schiller added straight-set wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, while first-year teammate Sara Finkleman shot past Catherine Miolla 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot.
Whitman stays in Tacoma on Saturday to play Puget Sound at 1 p.m.
Following that NWC match, Whitman stay in the Puget Sound Tennis Pavilion for an exhibition match against Bellevue Community College.
Tennis fans and members of the Whitman community in the Tacoma area are welcome to join the team for a reception with snacks between the Puget Sound and Bellevue CC matches.
