Victorious Men's Tennis Team Starts Outside, Finishes Inside

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- In a match that started outside with doubles and ended inside with singles, Whitman College rolled to an 8-1 men's tennis victory over visiting Pacific Lutheran on Friday.
Whitman, now 6-3 on the season and 2-0 in the NWC, won two of three matches in doubles, which were played under windswept sunny skies on the outdoor campus courts.
The match moved indoors to the Bratton Tennis Center for singles with Whitman sweeping all six matches. The loss dropped the Lutes to 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference.
Senior Conor Holton-Burke and junior Matt Tesmond were winners at No. 1 doubles, downing Zack AhYat and Taylor Dickey.
Sophomore Andrew La Cava and freshman James Rivers dominated at No. 2 doubles, beating Daniel Cotton and Luke Olson 8-1.
No. 3 doubles morphed into a bit of a marathon with Pacific Lutheran's Spencer Herron and Near Berg notching a 9-8 (14-12) victory over Whitman sophomores Will Huskey and Steven Roston.
Once singles moved indoors, Roston was the first to finish with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Neal Berg in the No. 4 spot.
Rivers made it 4-1 Whitman with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Cotton at No. 2 singles, and senior Adriel Borshansky secured the clinching fifth team point with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Dickey at No. 3.
Holton-Burke, playing at No. 1 singles, outlasted AhYet 6-4, 6-3, and Tesmond overcame Sam Angel 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6.
The last match to finish was No. 5, where Huskey out-battled Olson 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).
Whitman, the four-time defending NWC champion, stays at home Saturday for an 1 p.m. match against Puget Sound.
Pacific Lutheran heads to Spokane for Saturday match against Whitworth.
