WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Kate Potter, a senior on the Whitman College women's soccer team, has been named Northwest Conference Student Athlete of the Week for women's soccer (defense).

Potter, a three-year starter, was part of a defensive back line that smothered Eastern Oregon University's offense in a 3-0 season-opening Whitman victory on Sunday afternoon.

The Whitman defense did not yield its first shot until nearly 18 minutes had elapsed in the second half. Eastern Oregon finished the game with four shots, two of which were on goal.

Potter was one of three defensive starters, along with senior Libby Watkins and junior Erin Flannery, who played all 90 minutes of Sunday's game.

"Kate is a great center back and the foundation of our defense," Whitman coach Heather Cato said.

"She is a leader on the field, and she deserves to be noticed. I'm very proud of Kate and look forward to the great things she will do for us this season."

Potter also contributed two shots, one of them on goal, to the offense in Sunday's game, and she assisted on Whitman's third goal.

Amy Hasson, a senior midfielder who booted all three goals for the Missionaries, received Honorable Mention recognition for the NWC weekly award for offensive players.

The offensive award went to Linfield's Emily Fellows, who had four goals in a 7-4 victory over Oregon Tech.
