John's and Anderegg Score Career Highs in Women's win over UPS

Walla Walla, Wash. – In a big early season Northwest Conference matchup, the Lady Missionaries held off a game Puget Sound club 66 to 52 to improve their NWC record to 2 – 0 as they rode career highs from junior post, Sarah Anderegg (Redmond, WA) and sophomore guard, Heather Johns (W. Richland, WA). Anderegg and Johns both tallied 20. Meghan White (Jr, Huntington Bch, CA) grabbed 16 boards – 12 on the offensive end.

The Lady Missionaries held a 32 to 22 halftime advantage. The Lady Loggers, then, climbed to within five with just over 15 minutes to play when Sara Stewart converted a layup, making the score 37 – 32, but Whitman was able to push the lead back out to an 11-point advantage as John’s did much of the damage, scoring 7 points during a 4-minute stretch, including a weaving layup and a coast-to-coast score with 8:12 remaining.

The Lady Loggers could not get closer than 8. Johns and sophomore guard, Tiffani Traver (Oregon City, OR) both sank a pair of free-throws to put the game on ice.

Whitman broke open a tight game in the first half with an 11 – 0 run that was sparked by strong defense. White blocked an attempted free-throw jumper and also had a denial in the paint during the stretch -- the 5-10 forward had 5 blocks, in all. The run was capped by a steal by Traver who took it coast-to-coast for a lay-in that made the score the Missionaries 30 Puget Sound 15. The Loggers closed the margin to 10 by half on a free-throw jumper by Amanda Forshay, a trey by Emily Sheldon, and a baseline jumper from Kelsey McKinnis.

Stewart led the Loggers in scoring with 9.  Forshay added 8.

The Lady Missionaries at 2 – 0 in the NWC (7 – 1` overall) will take a break from conference play with a game tomorrow night at home against Corban University as part of the Kim Evanger Raney Classic. Tip-off is at 4 pm.  UPS, 6 and 2 overall, and 0 – 1 in the NWC heads to Spokane to face Whitworth tomorrow night – 6 pm tip
