Walla Walla, Wash. -- The Whitman Men's Soccer team made a statement by posting a 1-0 win over the #9 University of Redlands. Whitman's Michael Axelson put home the deciding goal early in the second half. In the 49th minute, Axelson received a pass over the top of the defense from Junpei Tsuji and finished in the top left corner past the keeper.

Redlands, a consistently strong team in the west, was shut out by a strong Whitman defense. Whitman's Head Coach Mike Washington commented, "The team battled and worked as hard as any team we have fielded. Redland's pressure from corners and set pieces was a constant threat as they were by far a much bigger team. The heart of our team was bigger than the physical size we saw from them."

Whitman' Goalie, Michael Bathurst, produced a shutout in Whitman's first match of the season. Whitman moves to 1-0-0 and looks to continue it's strong play against Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps this weekend.
