Men's Tennis Wins to Open Title Defense

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Three-time defending Northwest Conference champion Whitman College opened defense of its men's tennis crown with an 8-1 victory over Pacific University on a chilly Sunday in Forest Grove, Ore.
Whitman, winning its 67th consecutive regular season conference match, broke on top early with a sweep in doubles.
Junior Conor Holton-Burke and freshman Andrew La Cava were 8-5 winners at No. 1 doubles.
Senior Etienne Moshevich and sophomore Jeff Tolman dominated at No. 2 doubles with an 8-1 triumph.
Senior Quin Miller and sophomore Matt Tesmond completed the sweep with an 8-3 win at No. 3.
The most competitive match in singles came at No. 3, where Pacific's Troy Zuroske eked out a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Tolman.
Holton-Burke at No. 1 singles and La Cava at No. 2 posted identical 6-1, 6-1 victories over Spencer Hing and Micheal Okada, respectively.
Miller was also a 6-1, 6-1 winner, beating Eric Furuya at No. 6 singles.
Senior Chris Bailey at No. 4 and sophomore Sam Sadeghi at No. 5 added to Whitman's string of victories in singles. Both players notched 6-3, 6-0 wins over Derek Cooley and Alen Suklje.
After the match, which got underway at 10 a.m., Whitman headed to nearby Newberg, Ore., for a second NWC match against George Fox.
