Reid Paces Whit Men at XC Regional Race

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Senior Curtis Reid placed 40th to lead the Whitman College men's cross country team to a 10th-place showing at the NCAA Division III West Region meet on Saturday in Claremont, Calif.

Reid, who finished the 8,000-meter course in 27:24.82, enjoyed his best-ever finish at the regional meet. His previous high-water mark was a 71st-place showing a year ago.

Two freshmen, Alfredo Villasenor and Cory Rand, were next in line for Whitman, placing 51st and 61st, respectively, with times of 27:49.42 and 28:07.99.

Rounding out Whitman's top five were senior Matthew Kelly, who was 67th in 28:26.85, and freshman Hugh Parker, who was 68th in 28:27.03.

Two juniors, Sam Hennessey (69th, 28:27.66) and Daniel Luecke (84th, 29:15.37), also ran for Whitman.

Whitman finished 10th among 16 teams with 273 place points for its first five finishers. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was first with 50 points. Willamette second with 64 points and Whitworth third with 88.

Jackson Brainerd, a sophomore at Colorado College, won the race in 25:26.65. There were 105 finishers.
