WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- A total of 43 youngsters between the ages of eight and 14 enjoyed a week-long "Together We Can" basketball and leadership camp earlier this month at Whitman College.
The Whitman men's basketball program, in conjuction with title sponsor Key Technology and two dozen local sponors, provided the camp free of registration charge. The only cost for campers was a $20 administrative fee.
"Most camps cost anywhere from $150 to $200 per week, and that simply isn't doable for many families in our community," Whitman head coach Eric Bridgeland says. "We are so blessed to have local businesses, such as Key Technology, who care enough about children to give back in such a powerful way."
Applebees, State Farm - Liz Conover, Community Bank, Holiday Inn Express, Marcus Whitman Hotel, Baskin Robbins, Sheri's, Tony's Sub Shop, Inland Cellular, Dream Ride Charters, LaQuinta Inn, Doyle Electric, Best Western Walla Walla Suites, Clarette's Restaurant, and Walla Walla Union Bulletin.
"It was an incredible week of camp," Bridgeland says. "Every single camper who attended gave a great effort on the basketball side of things, but more importantly, they embraced the positive leadership and life skills that we talked about each day -- and did it with great enthusiasm!
"What is truly special is that our sponsors stepped up to make it financially possible for these children to have the opportunity to attend camp. This kind of thing simply doesn't happen in most communities -- Walla Walla is one of kind."
A second camp session, which runs August 6-9, is open to boys ages eight to 14. Hours each day are 9 a.m. to noon. The only cost associated with the camp is a $20 administrative fee.
To register for the camps, parents can contact Whitman assistant coach Matt Airy by phone (509 386-1945) or e-mail (email@example.com).
