WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The Whitworth University women took another step toward defense of their Northwest Conference tennis title with a 7-2 road victory over Whitman College Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates remain undefeated in conference play, improving to 12-0 and 14-3 on the season.
Whitman slipped to 9-3 in the NWC and 11-7 overall.
Whitworth snared the early advantage by winning two of three competitive matches in doubles.
Whitman tallied its doubles point at No. 2, where seniors Hadley DeBree and Divneet Kaur beat Mya Towne and Erica Bosman 8-4 to even the team scoring at 1-1.
The first doubles match to finish came at No. 3, where Whitworth's Megan Wingfield and Katie Staudinger won the last two games to claim an 8-5 victory over sophomore Emily Rolston and first-year Missionary Kate Kunkel-Patterson.
In a back-and-forth match at No. 1 doubles, Rachel Burns and Alli Marshall edged Alyssa Roberg, another of Whitman's first-year players, and junior Elise Otto by an 8-6 count.
Whitman pulled even at 2-2 when Otto beat Marshall 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. But the Pirates upped their lead to 4-2 when Towne subdued DeBree 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 and Bosman downed Kaur 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4.
Burns notched the clinching fifth team point at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Roberg. After falling behind 5-0 in the second set, Roberg reeled off five straight games before Burns regained command to avoid a third set.
Singles matches at No. 5 and No. 6 were in progress when rain forced those players to move from the campus outdoor courts to Whitman's Bratton Tennis Center.
Staudinger finished with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Rolston at No. 5, and Wingfield held off Kunkel-Patterson for a 6-4, 6-7 (7-5), 10-4 win.
Earlier this season in Spokane, Whitworth slipped past Whitman 5-4.
Both Whitman and Whitworth hit the road next weekend for Friday and Saturday matches at Pacific and Linfield.
