Whit Women Take First of Two from Fox

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- In the first of two Saturday matches against short-handed George Fox, the Whitman College women's tennis team posted a 9-0 Northwest Conference victory Saturday morning on the campus outdoor courts.
Whitman improved to 10-6 on the season and 8-2 in the NWC.
With just five players on hand, the Bruins forfeited points at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles as their record slipped to 0-12 overall and 0-11 in conference.
Cara Griffith and Liliya Abildayeva got off to a good start for George Fox in one of the two opening matches in doubles. But after Griffith and Abildayeva stormed to a 4-1 lead at No. 2 doubles, Whitman's Elise Otto and Kate Kunkel-Patterson took seven straight games to finish with an 8-4 victory.
Divneet Kaur and Hadley DeBree led from start of finish in an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles. Down 5-2 midway through the match, Bruins rallied to within 6-5 before DeBree and Kaur won the next two games to close our the victory.
Three first-year players were part of the sweep in singles as Whitman took all five matches in straight sets. Alyssa Roberg beat Robinson at No. 1, Kunkel-Patterson downed Abildayeva at No. 4, and Dena Wessel got the win over Shawna Buck at No. 5.
Otto and Kaur also won in singles for the Missionaries.
Today's second match between the two schools was slated for a mid-afternoon start.
