Polar Bears Down Whits to Cap Big Week

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Bowdoin College capped a strong week of play in California with an 8-1 neutral-court victory over the short-handed Whitman College women's tennis team Tuesday morning in Azusa, Calif.
Bowdoin (Brunswick, Maine), No. 16 in the latest NCAA Division III nationaly rankings, ran its season record 5-1.
Whitman is 8-5 on the season and set to play a second match later today against La Verne in Claremont, Calif.
Bowdoin played four other nationally ranked teams over the past week in California, beating three of them.
The Polar Bears took an early 2-1 lead against Whitman with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Whitman picked up its lone team point at No. 2 doubles, where seniors Hadley DeBree and Divneet Kaur won 8-4.
Elise Otto and Alyssa Roberg lost 8-3 in the top doubles slot, and Emily Rolston and Kate Kunkel-Patterson fell 8-4 at No. 3.
With Roberg still recovering from illness and playing doubles only, Whitman dropped five of the six matches in singles in straight sets.
The exception came at No. 1, where Otto came up just short against Kellen Alberstone by scores of 2-6, 7-5, 10-5.
Sophomore Charlotte Scott made a strong showing in her first set at No. 6 singles, losing 7-5, before her opponent picked off six straight games in the second set.After playing La Verne later today, Whitman concludes its Spring Break trip on Thursday at Redlands.
