WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Blanking its third Northwest Conference opponent of the season, the Whitman College women's tennis team rolled over visiting Pacific University 9-0 Saturday afternoon on the outdoor courts.
Whitman, now 3-1 in the NWC and 3-2 overall, opened with a sweep in doubles, although senior Hadley DeBree and first-year teammate Alyssa Roberg needed a 7-4 tie-breaker to notch a 9-8 victory over Dayna Wong and Rachel Mizuno at No. 2.
Senior Divneet Kaur and junior Elise Otto got the win at No. 1 doubles, posting an 8-3 victory over Cat Goya and Megan Yoshimoto.
Sophomores Emily Rolston and Charlotte Scott were the winners at No. 3, downing Stephanie Villegas and Michelle Soga 8-5.
The best matches in singles came at No. 1, where Roberg edged Goya 6-3, 2-6, 10-8, and at No. 4, where Kaur got past Mizuno in two sets by the same 7-6 (7-3) score.
Otto was untouchable at No. 2, winning 6-0, 6-0, and DeBree was nearly so at No. 3, rolling 6-1, 6-0.
Rolston won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 and first-year Missionary Kate Kunkel-Patterson downed Dawn Green 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.
"It was a gorgeous day outside and at spots we played brilliantly," Whitman coach John Hein said.
"Elise played really well, but it was so great to see us pull through in several tough tie breaks," he added. "Pacific is a very good team with lots of talent that is maturing, but in the end I was so proud of our composure up and down the line-up."
The loss dropped Pacific to 2-5 in conference and 2-6 on the season.
Whitman wraps up its weekend when it hosts Linfield at 10 a.m. Sunday.
