Wildcats Slip Past Whit Tennis Women

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- An early 2-1 lead after doubles proved decisive as visiting Linfield slipped past Whitman College 5-4 in Northwest Conference women's tennis action Sunday on the outdoor courts.
Linfield, improving to 4-2 in the NWC, posted 8-6 victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to gain the advantage. The two sides then split the six singles matches, three of which went to three sets.
Whitman, now 3-2 in conference, tallied its lone point in doubles at No. 2, where senior Hadley DeBree and first-year teammate Alyssa Roberg bested Sarah Watanabe and Sarah Click, winning 9-8 on the strength of a 7-5 tie-breaker.
Sallie Katter and Abby Olbrich were 8-6 winners for Linfield at No. 1 doubles, downing Whitman senior Divneet Kaur and junior Elise Otto.
Sophie Larson and Kirstie Franceschina got the Wildcat win at No. 3 with an 8-6 decision over Whitman sophomore Emily Rolston and first-year teammate Kate Kunkel-Patterson.
The two teams split the first four decisions in singles with Whitman winning at No. 1 and No. 4.
Roberg scrambled past Olbrich 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 and Kaur outlasted Click 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 4.
Katter survived a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 battle with Otto at No. 2, and Larson overcame DeBree by scores of 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 3.
With Linfield leading 4-3, Kiana Nip scored the clinching fifth team point a straight set victory at No. 5 singles.
Kunkel-Patterson then added a final team point for Whitman with a 6-4, 6-7 (7-3), 10-8 win at No. 6.
