Women's Tennis Slams Second Shutout

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Less than 24 hours after blanking Puget Sound 9-0, the Whitman College women's tennis team shut out visiting Pacific Lutheran by the same score Saturday morning.
Whitman, improving to 2-0 to start the Northwest Conference season, returned to action Saturday afternoon to host Lewis-Clark State in a non-conference bout (match still in progress).
All but two matches in singles in the Whitman-Pacific Lutheran encounter were played on Whitman's outdoor courts.
The Missionaries started with a sweep in doubles, although seniors Hadley DeBree and Divneet Kaur had to battle for a 9-8 (7-3) victory over Pacific Lutheran's Ashley Coats and Cora Wigen.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Emily Rolston and first-year teammate Alyssa Roberg bested Pacific Lutheran's Heidi Weston and Tina Aarsvold 8-1.
Kate Kunkel-Patterson, also a first-year Missionary, and sophomore Charlotte Scott posted an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles, downing Ali Burnside and Caitlyn Hoerr.
Roberg, playing the first singles match of her college career, slipped past Coats at No. 1 by scores of 6-0, 6-2.
DeBree got past Burnside 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2, and Kaur scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Aarsvold at No. 3.
The decisions in the remaining singles matches were close. Rolston got past Weston 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4, and Scott switched those scores for a 7-5, 6-3 win overe Krista Fredricks at No. 6.
Kunkel-Patterson was the winner at No. 5 singles, outpointing Hoerr 6-1, 6-4.
After this afternoon's match against Lewis-Clark State, Whitman is off until next Sunday when it plays at Whitworth.
Pacific Lutheran, which is off to an 0-3 start, hosts Lewis & Clark and Pacific next Friday and Saturday.
