WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Josh Duckworth, a freshman guard on the Whitman College basketball team, was named Northwest Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for men's basketball Tuesday afternoon.
The award was based on his play last weekend, when he helped the Missionaries collect two more victories, extending their winning streak to seven.
Duckworth, a 6-foot-2 guard, averaged 19.5 points in the two games, making 15 of 23 shots from the floor, including four of five attempts from the 3-point line.
He enjoyed a near perfect shooting night against Willamette, scoring 23 points while connecting on all eight of his field goal attempts and five of six free throws. He also handed out four assists and made four steals.
Duckworth had 16 points and five rebounds in Friday's win over George Fox, which clinched Whitman's first NWC playoff berth since the 1995-96 season.
A few hours after Duckworth's award was announced, he played a pivotal role in Whitman's eighth-straight victory, a 82-79 come-from-behind triumph over previously unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Whitworth.
He accounted for 24 points and eight rebounds, both of which were season-high numbers, as Whitman scored the final 17 points of the game to beat Whitworth by three.
On the season, Duckworth is averaging 12.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists as part of a deep Whitman rotation. He is shooting 42.9 percent from the 3-point line.
Duckworth and his teammates finish the NWC regular season on Friday at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. A victory in that game will clinch a first-round home playoff game for the Missionaries.
Duckworth is a graduate of the Brentwood School in Los Angeles, Calif.
