Whit Women's Tennis Breezes Past Hardin-Simmons 9-0

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Apart from one three-set match in singles and one close battle in doubles, the Whitman College women's tennis team breezed to its ninth straight victory by blanking Hardin-Simmons 9-0 Thursday at the UT-Dallas Tennis Center in Richardson, Texas.

Whitman, ranked No. 10 in the West Region, elevated in season record to 9-2 while dropping the Cowgirls to 4-4.

After splitting the first two sets with her opponent, Genene Haddad, at No. 3 singles, Whitman junior Kate Kunkel-Patterson dominated the third-set tie-breaker, winning 10-1.

The most competitive match in doubles came at the No. 3 spot, where senior Lizzy Schiller and first-team teammate Erin Minuth got past Amelia Chaney and Tram Le by an 8-6 count.

First-year twin sisters Courtney and Morgan Lawless continued to play well in their home state, winning straight-set decisions in the top two spots in singles.

Courtney Lawless posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Lauren Jay at No. 1 singles while Morgan Lawless won 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 slot.

Maddy Webster, another of Whitman's first-year players, cruised past Kelsi Jackson 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles, and it was Schiller rolling over Chaney 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5.

Sophomore Hadley Scherer survived a close first set to beat Le 7-6, 6-2.

Whitman's other wins in doubles included an 8-3 victory at No. 1, where Courtney Lawless and junior Alyssa Roberg knocked off Jay and Haddad 8-3.

Webster teamed with sophomore Hannah Palkowitz at No. 2 doubles to blank Jackson and Morgan Rainier 8-0.

After a short break, Whitman returned to the courts to face UT-Dallas in for a second Thursday match.

Whitman continues its Spring Break trip on Friday when it plays No. 8 UT-Tyler.

The trip ends on Saturday when the Missionaries battle No. 2 Trinity. In addition to its regional standing, Trinity is also ranked No. 13 at the national level.
