WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- After Katie Zajicek won medalist honors at last weekend's Northwest Conference Spring Classic, it came as no surprise today when the first-year Whitman College golfer was named NWC Student Athlete of the Week for women's golf.
Zajicek was one of just two golfers who broke 80 in Saturday's opening round, which was played in strong, cold winds at The Links at Hawks Prairie in Lacey, Wash.
Trailing the leader by one stroke after the first round, Zajicek shot a second straight 79 on Sunday to finish with a 158 total, beating her nearest opponent by six strokes.
Zajicek's individual efforts also sparked Whitman to a first-place finish in the team scoring. The twin triumphs were the first-ever individual and team victories for the women's golf program at one of the NWC's three primary tournaments.
The team victory moved the Whitman women into a second-place tie in the season-long conference standings.
At last October's NWC Fall Classic, Zajicek placed fifth in the individual scoring while Whitman took fourth in the team scoring.
Whitman can claim its first-ever women's NWC golf title if it wins the final conference tournament later this month at Columbia Point in Richland, Wash.
Next up for the Missionary women, however, is the Whitman Invitational, slated for this Saturday at Columbia Point. Three NWC teams -- Whitworth, George Fox and Pacific -- are expected to send teams to the one-day invitational.
