Kelly, Rand Lead Men's Pack in Salem

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Senior Matt Kelly and freshman Cory Rand were the top finishers for the Whitman College men's cross country team at the Charles Bowles Invitational in Bush Park in Salem, Ore.

With nearly 200 runners representing all three NCAA levels crowding the 8,000-meter course, Kelly finished 75th in 25:53.41. Rand was a few steps behind, placing 81st in 25:59.09.

Adding to Whitman's team score were freshman Hugh Parker (91st, 26:12.41), senior Curtis Reid (93rd, 26:15.41) and freshman Alfredo Villasenor (112th, 26:28.47). 

"Our men again had a great lead pack," Whitman coach Malcolm Dunn said. "Our top four guys were all within 20 seconds of one another."

Whitman, 15th in the team scoring with 395 place points, beat three other Northwest Conference schools. Puget Sound was 16th with 430 points, George Fox 18th with 487 points, and Pacific Lutheran 19th with 544 points.

By the time the NWC Championships roll around late this month, Dunn said, "we'd love to finish in the top four."

Chico State's Michael Wickman won the race in 24:08.06, leading his squad to first in the team scoring with 45 points. Boise State was second with 52 points and Willamette third with 113 points. Other NWC schools in the running were Whitworth (7th, 237), Linfield (12th, 308) and Lewis & Clark (14th, 389).

Others running for Whitman included Daniel Luecke (129th), Sam Hennessey (133rd), Taylor Mesojednik (139th), and John Callow (140th). The Missionary contingent also included Yonas Fikak (154th), Brendan Boyer (163rd) and Whitney Griggs (176th).
