WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- For the second time this fall and third time in less than two years, Whitman College sophomore Katie Zajicek has been named Northwest Conference Student Athlete of the Week for women's golf.
Zajicek earned her latest award after posting the low score -- an even-par 72 -- in last Saturday's Concordia Invitational at Heron Lakes in Portland, Ore.
"Katie's performance was inspirational, especially considering the fact that she started her round with a double bogey seven on the first hole and then played the last 17 holes at two under," Whitman coach Skip Molitor said.
Zajicek played her round -- the first time a member of the Whitman women's team has shot even par in a competitive setting -- in the same grouping with two of the top small-college players in the northwest.
Sunny Powers, a sophomore who leads Concordia in stroke average this fall, finished second, one stroke behind Zajicek.
Sara Molyneux, a Concordia senior and an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American last season, finished in third place with a four-over 76.
Zajicek received her first NWC weekly award this fall after capturing medalist honors by seven strokes at the Whitman Invitational. She paced Whitman to a 25-stroke victory in the team scoring, and her 36-hole 149 total set a new individual school record for a two-round tournament.
Her first NWC award came last April when she won medalist honors at the NWC Spring Classic.
The 2011 fall season concludes this Saturday and Sunday with the NWC Fall Classic, which also takes place at Heron Lakes.
