Mountaineers Outscore PLU at Whit Tourney

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Running its early season record to 8-1, Eastern Oregon handed Pacific Lutheran a 81-67 men's basketball defeat Saturday night at the Walla Walla Vineyard Inn Classic on the Whitman College campus.
The Mountaineers, who staged a second-half rally on Friday to beat Whitman 99-92, raced past Pacific Lutheran late in the first half and then led throughout the final 20 minutes.
Jeff Ranstrom came off the Eastern Oregon bench to post a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Jamar Johnson added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Mountaineers, who also got 16 points from J.C. Cook and 13 from Cody Thurmond.
Jason Mumm combined eight points and seven rebounds for Eastern Oregon, which shot 49.2 percent from the floor for the game and outrebounded the Lutes 41-25.
Curtis Trondsen scored 14 points to pace Pacific Lutheran, which saw its record fall is 1-3. Kyle MacTaggart gave the Lutes 11 points and five rebounds while Andrew Earnest finished with 10 points.
James Conti had eight points and seven assists for Pacific Lutheran.
The Lutes raced to a 14-7 lead in the first four minutes of the game, but Eastern Oregon pulled even at 20-all by the 11:24 mark.
After the Mountaineers eased in front 28-25 lead with eight minutes left, MacTaggart's three-point play a minute later briefly returned the Lutes to the lead at 30-28. The rest of the half was all Eastern Oregon as the Mountaineers reeled off 10 straight points and held a 45-35 lead at the break.
Ranstrom sparked the Mountaineers in the opening half, scoring 18 points off the bench on eight-of-nine shooting from the floor while snaring seven rebounds. Cook added 11 points, also off the bench, while canning three of five 3-point tries.
Whitman's tournament concludes tonight with the host team playing Northwest University in a game slated for an 8 p.m. start.
