WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- For the second time this season, Whitman College sophomore Andrew La Cava has been named  Northwest Conference Student Athlete of the Week for men's tennis.

Andrew La Cava

La Cava led Whitman to four NWC road victories in two days last weekend, winning three times in straight sets at No. 1 singles. He did not play singles in Whitman's 9-0 victory at Lewis & Clark on Sunday.

He also shared in victories in three of the four doubles matches he played over the weekend, winning two of three matches at No. 1 doubles and adding a triumph at No. 2 doubles.

La Cava picked up two more victories on Monday in Whitman's 9-0 win at Willamette, although that match was not considered for the latest NWC weekly award. He won at No. 1 singles and teamed with junior Jeff Tolman for an 8-5 triumph at No. 2 doubles.

La Cava, who began the spring season with a No. 7 national ranking in singles, has a 7-3 record at No. 1 singles thus far this spring. That includes a 4-0 mark against conference opponents. Two of his losses came in three sets, one of them at the hands of Cark Kuschke, a senior from Johannesburg, South Africa, who plays for NCAA Division I Montana.

In doubles, La Cava is 10-1 on the season in the No. 2 slot and 3-1 at No. 1 doubles.

As a team, Whitman is 12-3 on the season (8-0 in the NWC) and on track for its fifth consecutive conference title.

Ranked No. 8 nationally, Whitman plays three Spring Break matches this weekend in southern California, starting with a neutral-court battle with New York's Rochester University on Friday in Claremont, Calif.

Whitman follows with a match Saturday at Whittier before facing No. 18 Trinity (Connecticut) on Sunday in Pomona, Calif.

After Spring Break, Whitman has five regular season matches remaining, four of them against NWC opponents.

The top four teams at the end of the regular season meet Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22, in the NWC post-season tournament. The winner of that tournament, which be hosted by the regular season champ, gets an automatic berth in the NCAA DIII national championship tournament.
